6. How many work hours in a month

The calculation of monthly hours can be used to determine the full-time equivalent, or RPS, requirement of employees for a period, employee wages, labor costs, and many other problems.

Calculation methods
There are basically two ways to calculate hours per month. With full-time employees, you should assume that an employee will work 40 hours. A quick and easy way to calculate monthly hours is to multiply 40 hours per week by 4 weeks, 160 hours for the month.

The second method will provide an average number of hours of work in a month. The known constants are 40 hours per week, 52 weeks per week and 12 months per year: 40 hours per week x 52 weeks per year / 12 months per year = 173.33 average monthly hours.

Now take a look at these results. Method 1 shows 160 hours per month, and Method 2 shows 173.33 hours per month; Prices are being closed at 13.33 hours. This can be a significant difference when making your calculations.

Which calculation is best?
Unless you are provided with a specific calendar month and year, or the number of working days in a month, it may be most appropriate to use method 2 because it will give us the average number of hours worked in a month, while the method 1 will occupy only those months with 20 working days. Take a look at the image below.

How many work hours in a month
How many work hours in a month

By calculating the workday (Monday to Friday) in these three months in 2015 (February 2015 [28-day month], April 2015 [30-day month], and May 2015 [31-day month]), you see That the number of working days varies in each. There are a total of 20 workdays (160 monthly working hours) in February, a total of 21 workdays (168 monthly working hours) in May, and a total of 22 workdays (176 monthly hours) in April.

As you can see, multiplying by 4 weeks using 40 hours per week represents only a few months where there are 20 working days.

Example count
Question: If the labor time for this month was 2,425 hours, how many full-time equivalents (FTE) were there for this month?

Solution: First, how many hours worked in 1 month 1: (40 hours per week X 52 weeks per year) / 12 months per year = 173.33 hours per month. Then take the total labor hours of this month to 2,425 and divide it by 173.33 hours per day. 13.99, or about 14 FTEs have worked for this month.

7. How many work hours in a year OPM

Work hours in a year OPM Fact sheet: Calculation of hourly rates of pay using 2,087-hour dividers

Calculation of hourly and biennial rates for most federal civilian employees is required by the 5 U.S.C. 5504 (b).

The hourly rate of basic pay is divided by the annual rate of the employee’s basic salary based on 2,087 hours. Rates must be rounded to the nearest percentage, calculated as one-half percent and the next higher percentage (for example, between $ 18.845 to $ 18.85).

Duplex rates of basic pay are calculated by multiplying the employee’s hourly basic wage rate by 80 hours.

Employees covered
The 2,087-hour separator should be used for almost all civilian federal employees in an executive agency, including employees under the General Schedule (GS), and most other employees, unless excluded by law. (See “Exclude Employees Below”)

Although excluding the employee’s premium pay definition in 5 U.S.C. 5541 (2), the following employees are covered by a 2,087-hour denominator: the head of an executive agency, the head of a military department, a foreign service officer, a member of the senior foreign service, a member of the senior executive service, and A member of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Senior Executive Service of the Drug Enforcement Administration.

Employees left
The 2,087-hour separator cannot be used for an employee or person excluded from the definition of “employee” for purposes of premium pay in 5 U.S.C. 5541 (2), except those listed as listed above.

In addition, firefighters reported 5 U.S.C. 5545b hourly rates and overtime pay are subject to special rules for calculation. See 5 CFR Part 550, subpart m. In addition, the rate of pay for some Department of Veterans Affairs employees paid under Title 38, United States Code, is calculated using the 2,080 hourly denominator.
